Summary
At first sight the village church at Lastingham, set upon a hillock on the edge of the moors with the ground dropping away to the east, looks like a standard Norman parish church with later additions (Figure 1). The exterior has an eastern apse, preceded by a forebay, with Romanesque detailing: a string-course with billet and other abstract ornament beneath round-headed windows. The aisles have tracery windows of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century date, and the tower is fifteenth century. It could pass muster as any ordinary parish church; but further inspection reveals something very rare. The apse is two-storied, a lower central window indicating the presence of a crypt within, and in the forebay on each side a low mural arch allows light into the crypt through a small eastward-facing window (Figure 2). On entering the church, we are presented towards the west with four large Romanesque piers designed to support the crossing of a substantial cruciform church (Figure 3). What we are dealing with, in fact, is not a simple parish church, but a partly completed Benedictine abbey church later converted for parochial use. We are doubly fortunate, not only that the monastic fabric has survived (albeit somewhat altered from the original design), but that there is documentary evidence that testifies to the brief period in the early 1080s in which it must have been raised, and the reasons why it was never completed.

The distribution and abundance of Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus and F. vesiculosus were described at four sheltered, rocky shores in the south of the Isle of Man. Canopy removal experiments were performed at mid tide level of one sheltered, canopy dominated shore to investigate the interactions between the dominant canopy alga, Ascophyllum nodosum and the competitively inferior canopy species of Fucus serratus and F. vesiculosus. Ascophyllum was removed from replicated plots, 2×2 m in size, in both winter and summer; the early growth and survival of fucoids in the presence and absence of the Ascophyllum canopy were monitored and the eventual development of a new canopy described. Juveniles of F. serratus originally present beneath the undisturbed canopy of Ascophyllum died following canopy removal but new recruitment resulted in some canopy development, principally in the winter experiment. Fucus vesiculosus, despite being completely excluded from the Ascophyllum zone of all four shores described, dominated the canopy removal plots of both winter and summer experiments. The Ascophyllum canopy did not recover over a five year period of observation, although a considerable increase in the abundance of Ascophyllum juveniles occurred.

We analyze deep CCD images of nearby Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies in an attempt to understand the nature of the progenitors which are hosting the current burst of star formation. In particular, we ask whether BCDs are hosted by normal or low-surface-brightness dI galaxies. We conclude that BCDs are in fact hosted by gas-rich galaxies which populate the extreme high-central-mass-density end of the dwarf galaxy distribution. Such galaxies are predisposed to having numerous strong bursts of star formation in their central regions. In this picture, BCDs can only occur in the minority of dwarf galaxies, rather than being a common phase experienced by all gas-rich dwarfs.

High-angle grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films are of technological interest because of the weak coupling observed between the grains; however, not all high-angle grain boundaries show this weak-link behavior. The microstructure of both these boundaries is not understood, nor is the reason for the differing electrical transport properties. High-angle grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films on MgO, where the angular misorientation between the grains is ∼45°, have been examined using high-resolution electron microscopy. The results show that the boundary structure can appear quite different even when the angular misorientation between the two grains is the same. The stability of the grain boundaries under the electron irradiation in the electron microscope was found to be a function of the accelerating voltage—400 kV leads to rapid disordering of the boundary region.

A specimen preparation technique for the study of surface reactions and thin-film effects in aluminum nitride ceramic substrates is described. The technique uses specially prepared electron-transparent thin-foil substrates. These substrates can be examined directly in the electron microscope without the need for any further specimen preparation.

The synthesis of aluminum nitride thin films by pulsed-laser ablation is demonstrated. The films were formed on single-crystal sapphire and graphite substrates. A number of techniques were used to characterize the films: transmission and scanning electron microscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and x-ray diffraction.

The benefits of AIN as a substrate material for the electronics packaging industry appear to be limited by the deleterious effects of boundaries in the polycrystalline material. Some observations on different types of boundary in AIN using several complementary techniques are reported.

The defects which occur in polycrystalline aluminum nitride are very detrimental to the beneficial physical and electrical properties. 'Dome-like' or 'D' defects, consisting of a flat basal fault joined to a curved planar fault, are examined by high-resolution electron microscopy. The basal segments are shown to contain a thin ∼5Å layer of a second phase and are associated with a stacking-fault and an antiphase boundary. A structural model is proposed for the defect which incorporates a layer of alumina at the basal segment of the 'D' defect. The formation of thisdefect is discussed.
